P.E.T.E.R. Paragraphs

Unless you're a teacher, you've probably never heard of a P.E.T.E.R. paragraph.  It is a useful analytical framework that English teachers use to help their students to respond to texts.  There are a few variations like P.E.E. or P.E.E.D., but I have found P.E.T.E.R. to be the most useful one (as well as being the one least likely to cause disturbing giggles in the classroom).  P.E.T.E.R. stands for Point, Evidence, Technique, Explain, Reader's response.

Point - this is where students are required to show that they understand the question and what is required of them.  They need to directly and succinctly state their intention for the question.

Evidence - here, they will need to either directly quote from the text given or refer to it explicitly.  They'll get more marks if they choose a quote that is relevant to the question, and has got language techniques in it that they find interesting.

Technique - they will now need to correctly identify and describe the language technique that was included in their quote, e.g. simile, metaphor, speech, juxtaposition etc.

Explain - Now for the juicy bit.  This and the next part of the paragraph is where they will get the most marks.  They will need to  be able to explain why they think the writer has used the technique/s identified.  This is highly subjective, so their marks will come from their ability to justify their answer.

Reader's response - Like the above part of this answer, they'll need to subjectively explain what the intended impact on the reader was supposed to be and if this was how it impacted them.

As an English teacher, I have found that if a student can master this format, they'll do well in their English exams.  This is because the other questions require an understanding of some aspect of P.E.T.E.R.  Encouraging your child to get to grips with it early, will give them confidence throughout the school year, and avoid the mad rush for tutoring before Mock and Final exams.

I can help you to support your child's education consistently throughout the school year, and to boost their confidence and enable them to do their best.  This will mean little or no need for expensive tuition right before exam season - a win for you and for your child!
