Triangulation

For most non-stem subjects, research should be the primary learning tool for homeschoolers in Key stages 2 and 3. So, equipping them with research tools will help them to focus well.  One such tool is called 'triangulation'.  This is where three different methods, attempts or references are used for one activity.

When it comes to looking for information, they should be taught to look for about three different online sources before taking it as gospel.  The same goes for books or people.  Finding three different people who can give you their perspective on whether or not Shakespeare was racist, for instance, is more likely to give our children a well-rounded and critical base from which to make up their own minds about a topic.  This is exactly what is needed in our society and, funnily enough, it is also what examiners are looking for - critical thinkers!

So, the next time your homeschooler asks a deep question, tell them to go and research it. But don't accept anything less than three documented references, as well as their own critical thinking on the matter.
